Smile Direct Club is an at-home treatment solution for teeth straightening. They were founded in the US in 2014 and have opened clear aligner outlets in numerous countries, expanding to the UK in 2019. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2023.
Smile Direct Club’s pricing is straightforward, with a one-off payment of £1,739. They also offer finance, but no interest-free options. They offer nocturnal aligners at the same price.
Their typical aligner treatment is said to last from 4 to 6 months on average. As nighttime aligners are worn for less time - 10 hours rather than 22 - these take from 8 to 10 months to deliver results.
Smile Direct Club’s aligners are made with a BPA-free thermoplastic polyurethane. While not uncomfortable, our panel found them among the least clear of all the options we tried for this comparison.
The process is an entirely at-home one. You can order a kit to make your own 3D impressions at home, or visit one of their SmileShop’s around the country to have it done there. You’ll get a 3D preview of your smile and you’ll then order your clear aligners. After that, you’ll receive your next set of aligners on a regular basis.
They offer a 30-day money-back promise, but that’s only until your first monthly payment becomes due, which doesn’t help if you have issues after that. Their Lifetime Smile Guarantee will let you have ‘touch-ups’ , but only if you’re replacing their retainers every six months and are making regular payments.
Their own bright on teeth whitening is included free with many clear aligner bundles.
Smile Direct Club has over 19,000 reviews on Trustpilot, with an average score of 4.6.
I was seen by Jessica, who made the whole process clear and comfortable. Having someone poke around your mouth can be quite intrusive… yet Jessica was a seasoned professional and had me laughing and joking instead. Highly recommended!
SHOCKING! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Worst customer service I’ve ever received. And now looking into further reviews I can see it’s a common issue - followed it to a T, finished and results were okay, wanted some further aligners and kept getting told the photos weren’t correct - completely agree with other reviews that it felt like they are stalling. They are ridiculously unhelpful. I was asked to pay for a nighttime retainer which was news to me! I would rather pay the extra and be seen by a dentist. Lesson learnt!
The worst experience of my life! Never have I had someone so pushy and desperate for a sale that they tried to trick me into signing a form even though i said I had come to hear more about it first and wasn’t in the position to pay and commit just yet and had come to find out more! The attitude on him changed so much when I refused to sign and he then tried giving me an offer to agree there and then to which took £1000 off the price but the force and tone in his voice was horrible! The red flags were screaming and I came out as soon as I could and just cried in my car after this horrible experience. He was not interested at all in explaining the process and just wanted me to sign and thought I wouldn’t read it and notice!
While Smile Direct Club is certainly affordable and has proven popular, our panel were definitely concerned about the recent bankruptcy filing in the US and how this might impact on patients in the UK in months to come. The lack of dentist oversight of the straightening process also means that we wouldn’t recommend Smile Direct Club for anything but the mildest cases.
